He determines the number of the stars;
He gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
His understanding is beyond measure.
Psalm 147:4-5 ESV
It is said that there are more stars in the universe than there are words spoken by all humans throughout all of history. That means that the universe is unbelievably vast. In fact, to our finite minds, it appears endless. There are billions upon billions upon billions of stars; each one continuously is self-destructing outward in massive nuclear explosions. The very gravity that keeps our feet held to this tiny blue dot of a planet is the same gravity that keeps each of these stars together. It is a delicate, but ferocious, balance.
Yet the most amazing thought of all is that our God knows the stars exact number, and He has named them all. No wonder the psalmist exclaims that the LORD is “abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.”
O soul, how great is the God that you serve!
Too rarely do you cry out with David, “O LORD, what is man that you regard him, or the son of man that you think of him. Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.”[1]
Too often are your thoughts consumed with self, as though you were the center of creation.
Too frequently, your thoughts seek to diminish the glory of God by thinking Him unable to save.
Do well always to remember: His power is both great and sufficient, gentle and fierce, vast and personal, for our God is great!
