Psalm 119:81 ESV

A new stanza is begun with this verse, wherein each line begins with the Hebrew letter kaph.

And the psalmist begins with his soul: My soul longs for your salvation. In Hebrew, soul (nephesh) is not only the spiritual component of a person. Rather, a nephesh is the whole person, body and spirit. Thus, the psalmist is essentially saying that his whole being longs for God’s salvation.

But what is that salvation?

There is likely an immediate sense and an ultimate sense of the word.

First, in the context of this psalm, affliction and persecution have been consistent themes. Indeed, in verse 84, the psalmist will cry out, “How long must your servant endure? When will you judge those who persecute me?” Thus, the immediate context of this cry for salvation is from the persecution and slander that he was facing.

Second, it is also a cry for ultimate salvation. He longs to be delivered from sin and its effects within the world, to resurrected to everlasting life with the LORD.

The second half then reads: I hope in your word. This applies to every circumstance. Whether we are being actively persecuted, experiencing great suffering, or simply lamenting the brokenness of the world, our hope is in God’s Word. Hope is essentially faith in what is still to come. It is trust that the LORD will bring to pass all that He has promised.

We trust that He will deliver His people.

We trust that He will reward those who delight in Him with the treasure of His eternal presence.

We trust that He will judge the wicked in righteousness and equity.

Today, our hope in these promises is rooted in the display of what God has already fulfilled through Jesus Christ. In the cross and resurrection of Christ, we see the faithfulness of God through the ages coming marvelously to His people. It is a sure anchor of the soul, as Hebrews says. But it does not anchor us to the earth, as normal anchors do; it anchors us into the heavenly places from which Christ will return for His bride and bring an end to sin, suffering, and death for all time.

Until that great and glorious day, let us declare with the psalmist:

My soul longs for your salvation.
I hope in your word.
